Meka
Mechatronics and rehabilitation of the knee
or of the lower limbs
or of the lower limbs
Meka is a mechatronic device used in the rehabilitation process of the knee and lower limbs, developed in collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa.
Meka is a 2-degrees-of-freedom wireless device equipped with sensors capable of detecting, in real time, the flexion/extension and abduction/adduction movements of the knee joint.
Numerous studies show how it is very important to start rehabilitation at an early stage after any surgery or post stroke, in order to re-educate the leg to its full function and to obtain stable results, capable of ensuring a good quality of life for the person.
For this reason, it is equally fundamental to be able to correctly assess the clinical picture by collecting objective data and formulating a made-to-measure recovery plan. Available in three sizes, it can be mounted indifferently on both lower limbs for the kinematic analysis of the knee, whilst walking and during other activities, such as specific exercises. Its use whilst walking is able to provide interesting information to clinicians, physiotherapists and staff of rehabilitation centres in general. It can be used to reduce the risk of falling for the elderly.
Once recorded, the data obtained can be viewed in numerical and graphic format, thus forming a personalised functional sheet for each user. Meka’s experimentation for knee rehabilitation in rehabilitation gyms has allowed highlighting different locomotion strategies based on age and the difficulty of the required task.
